Major Risks in Case of a Thunderstorm

  • Lightning
    - Lightning is one of the most serious dangers in the mountains. Being on ridges or exposed points, such as the higher sections of the Path of the Gods, increases the risk of being struck.
    - Lightning can also strike indirectly, traveling through the ground or trees.
  • Rock Falls
    - Intense rain can destabilize rocks, causing landslides and falling stones, especially on steep terrain and poorly maintained trails.
  • Slips
    - The coastal trails, often characterized by smooth limestone stones, become extremely slippery when it rains, increasing the risk of falls.
  • Hypothermia
    - Even if the weather is mild, the combination of rain, wind, and lower temperatures can cause hypothermia, especially if you're not properly equipped.

What to Do in Case of a Thunderstorm

  • Monitor the weather before you leave
    - Always check the local weather forecast. In case of thunderstorm warnings, postpone the hike. - Keep an eye on the sky: dark clouds, increasing wind, and a sudden drop in temperature are signs of an impending storm.
  • Move away from ridges and exposed points
    - If you're on a panoramic ridge or elevation, immediately descend to a lower and more sheltered area. - Avoid high places such as viewpoints or isolated rocks.
  • Avoid isolated trees and metal objects
    - Lightning tends to strike the tallest objects: do not stay under an isolated tree or near poles and fences. - Store trekking poles and other metal objects in a backpack, away from your body.
  • Seek shelter in a safe location
    - If possible, take shelter in a natural cavity or dense wooded area. - Do not stay in shallow caves or rocky outcrops: they may attract lightning instead of protecting you.
  • Crouch in a safe position
    - If the storm catches you in the open, crouch with your feet together and your torso lowered, minimizing contact with the ground. - Avoid lying flat: it increases the risk of electric shock through the body.
  • Be cautious with streams and fords
    - Heavy rain can turn dry streams into dangerous waterways. Avoid crossing them during or immediately after a thunderstorm.

How to Prevent Dangerous Situations

  • Equip yourself properly:
Always carry a waterproof and windproof jacket, a thermal blanket, and a headlamp.
  • Plan your timing:
Start early to finish the trek before the afternoon when thunderstorms are more common.
  • Download offline maps:
In case of poor visibility or unclear signage, a GPS app can prevent you from taking a dangerous detour.
  • Inform someone about your itinerary:
If you're hiking alone, let friends or family know the route you plan to take.

What to Do in Case of a Thunderstorm

  • Monitor the weather before setting out
    - Always check the local weather forecast. If there are thunderstorm warnings, postpone your hike. - Keep an eye on the sky: dark clouds, increasing wind, and a sudden drop in temperature are signs of an approaching storm.
  • Move away from ridges and exposed points
    - If you are on a scenic ridge or a high point, immediately descend to a lower, more protected area. - Avoid elevated locations like viewpoints or isolated rocks.
  • Avoid isolated trees and metal objects
    - Lightning tends to strike the tallest objects: do not stay under an isolated tree or near poles and fences. - Store trekking poles and other metal objects in your backpack, away from your body.
  • Seek shelter in a safe location
    - If possible, take cover in a natural cavity or a dense wooded area. - Avoid shallow caves or overhanging rocks: they may attract lightning instead of protecting you.
  • Crouch in a safety position
    - If a storm catches you in an open field, crouch with your feet together and your torso lowered, minimizing contact with the ground. - Avoid lying down completely: this increases the risk of electrical discharges passing through your body.
  • Be cautious near streams and crossings
    - Heavy rain can turn dry streams into dangerous waterways. Avoid crossing them during or immediately after a storm.

What Not to Do

  • Do not ignore the signs of a thunderstorm:
Delaying your descent or search for shelter can expose you to avoidable risks.
  • Do not seek shelter under isolated objects:
Even if they seem to offer immediate protection, they can attract lightning.
  • Do not run on slippery terrain:
Stay calm and proceed slowly to reduce the risk of falls.

Practical Tips

• Relying on a professional guide is essential in these situations: with their experience, they can identify the safest route and take all necessary precautions to handle bad weather safely, ensuring the group's protection.

• If a storm catches you by surprise while you're already on the trail, the priority is to find a safe location. Avoid staying on ridges or exposed viewpoints and try to descend to lower areas.

• It is important not to stay under isolated trees, overhanging rocks, or metal poles, as they could attract lightning. If you cannot find adequate shelter, the best position is to crouch with your feet together and your body as low as possible, keeping your hands off the ground.
