Scala is known the oldest town on the Amalfi Coast, Scala has a long and fascinating history linked to the Republic of Amalfi. Excursions to the surrounding mountains lead to the discovery of the ancient medieval walls once used to protect Scala and Amalfi, further downstream to the sea.
In the Middle Ages, Scala was an important stronghold of the Republic of Amalfi to the point that the close bond established brought much wealth to the families of prominent merchants in the small town. The town develops in a jagged way along the mountain and is divided into numerous hamlets, or villages, including Scala center, Minuta, Pontone, Campidoglio, San Pietro and Santa Caterina. Each small village is characterized by its unique atmosphere and is developed around a church.
